Do You Speak Cricket?
The cricket season having started, you may find yourself in the kind of company that knows how to speak the language of cricket. Cricket badgers. Do you speak cricket? Do you know the difference between a seed, a jaffa and a peach? They’re all good deliveries. Scarborough College’s Cricket Centre of Excellence is here to help!
Now some cricket speak is only about being interesting for interesting’s sake. A snick is the same as a nick, both hitting the edge of the bat. A dolly and a sitter are both easy catches. A beamer and a full toss are both bowled without bouncing.
Among the more useful lingo, we find the LBW. The leg-before-wicket is when the batter stops the ball from hitting the stumps with the pads. Out! In case that happens on the first ball, that out is also referred to as a golden duck – out on the very first ball.
Invariably, you’ll hear calls and shouts from the fielders. You may hear the word ‘silly’. Not a reference to a person’s intellect. That is any fielding position close to the batter. If you have ever stood close to the action, you might know why that is called silly. ‘Owzat!’ Don’t panic. That’s just a bunch of fielders thinking the batter is out. The batter tends to disagree with these kinds of calls.
For more cricket slang, please head over to Scarborough College on a Saturday morning.
