The changing fortunes of this grand country house and garden are told through stories of prosperity, loss and re-invention. From a wealthy teenager who created this Italian palace in Yorkshire to the Victorian family who liked tobogganing down the elegant cantilevered staircase.

Yorkshire! Achievement, Grit and Controversy is Beningbrough’s largest temporary exhibition to date with 25 well known achievers, game changers and nonconformists. Step into the Saloon Galleries on the first floor of the hall and discover works from artists such as Hepworth, Moore and Hockney. See portraits of Yorkshire faces like Michael Parkinson, Jarvis Cocker and Nicola Adams and maybe a few surprises mixed in. Who or what symbolises Yorkshire to you?

Outdoors, see what’s in season in the walled garden, stroll among luxurious borders and sit under the Pergola, the latest design from RHS Chelsea Gold Winner Andy Sturgeon. As the autumn harvest is starting, there will be apples and pears in abundance from over 50 fruit trees. Browse in the stables shop or treat yourself in the restaurant to the latest seasonal dishes.

For families, tick off activities on the must do play list – 50 things to do before you’re 11 3/4: build a den or let off steam in the wilderness play area. The top floor of the hall has interactive hands-on galleries, perfect for big and little kids.
