The centrepiece of the Pickering events calendar is the ever-popular Wartime Weekend, which is held every October, and includes a full programme of WWII and 1940s themed entertainment and events. The event is run by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway but is now so popular events have sprung up all over the town.
Attractions including singing, dancing, workshops, parades and fashion shows, in addition to living history showcases, period vehicle exhibitions and re-enactments. Incredibly popular with visitors from all over the UK and beyond.
Whether you want to dress up in period costume and get involved, or just do some sightseeing, it’s an excellent festival and fantastic fun for the whole family.
Pickering Town Centre Events:
For 2017 the vehicle parades are making a dramatic comeback.
On Saturday the 14th October, the foot parade will be led by the Yorkshire Corps of Drums and will include all disciplines of the military, followed by a vast array of 1940s military vehicles.
The foot parade will leave Pickering Junior School at 10:47am and walk along Middleton Road, Bridge Street, Market Place, Birdgate, and Smiddy Hill terminating on Hallgarth.
The Military Vehicle parade will form up on Park Street from 9am on Saturday and then follow the foot parade up Market Place, Birdgate, and Smiddy Hill, Hungate and then along the Ropery to start a second loop up the Market Place again.
Sunday will see the return of the civilian vehicle parade with classic vehicles such as a 1930s Austin; 10, Rolls-Royce convertible and period motorcycles. The Military parade will be repeated with a civilian parade following this on the same route, starting at 11am approximately.
The Market Place will also be host to children’s rides including a Helter Skelter.
Stalls selling all your 1940’s needs will be situated in the White Swan and Black Swan car parks.
The
Black Swan will have a
dance inside a large marquee on
Friday and
Saturday and Sunday night. With Live music, cocktail bar and food it is sure to be a truly swinging night.
