Slingsby Scarecrow Festival

May 8, 2020 - May 10, 2020

Throughout the early May Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 8th May to Sunday 10th May, Scarecrows of all shapes and sizes are dotted around the Howardian Hills village of Slingsby for what is aptly known as the annual Scarecrow Trail, an event established to raise funds for the children of Slingsby Community Primary School. Clues are created based on each Scarecrow entry and used to complete the trail which takes you on a thought provoking and sometimes, bemused wander around the village.

This year sees a slight change to the usual early May Bank Holiday weekend due to the bank holiday falling on a Friday instead of a Monday to coincide with Victory in Europe Day. And it will be on this Friday that the village will hold its traditional May Day festivities on the village green. Events include maypole dancing, traditional stalls and refreshments and Scarecrow trails will be available to purchase for a small fee from the Friends of Slingsby School stall, the Methodist Church and the village hall.

For the balance of the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, trails will be available in the ‘Pop-Up’ cafe operating in the Methodist Chapel along with refreshments, homemade cakes and savouries and a ‘pre-loved’ children’s stall. Other outlets selling trails throughout the Bank Holiday weekend are the Robin Hood Caravan Park and village shop.

The Slingsby Scarecrow Trail weekend provides excellent entertainment for all ages, and coupled with the May Day festivities, is heart-warming traditional fare. Each year the Scarecrow entries and standard of creativity increase, providing anyone attending the trail with delight and wonder. Come and join us for a relaxing stroll around the village, put your feet up afterwards whilst enjoying a refreshment or two, and don’t forget to vote for your favourite Scarecrow for a chance to win a prize!
