This year at the Mumbler Big Weekend at Piglets we will be raising money for the SCBU support group. This was voted for by the Mumblers and I’m so thrilled that we’re supporting this hugely worthwhile cause.
You can donate to them on the day by having a treatment at the event in ‘The Retreat’ (the beautiful papakata tents… if you needed an excuse to look after yourself then this is it, head over there to book your slot as soon as you get there as they will go quickly!) 8 talented and very kind therapists are giving up their time and offering 30 minute session for just £10 to SBCU for you to have a neck massage, reflexology, indian head massage, Tuina and hand and arm massages among other things. You also donate when getting your mini mumbler face painted or glitter tattoo’d (£1 from each one goes to SCBU) or donating in the many buckets that will be around the park, at food stands etc.
We also wanted to raise awareness of the fantastic work they do so here is a little more about them…
The Support Group is a Registered Charity which was formed in 1984.
Our newly updated objects are “The relief, care and treatment of premature and sick newborn babies in the Special Care Baby Unit at York Hospital, by assisting with the purchase of specialised medical equipment, improving amenities and facilities, providing emotional support, and financial assistance with travel costs, for parents and siblings, and supporting the education and vocational training of staff on the unit.”
So who are we?
We have both trustees and members on the Support Group who are either staff who work on York SCBU or parents who have had a baby/babies on the Unit.
What do we do?
We work together to give a better start in life to the tiny or sick babies and their families who are been treated and cared for on the Unit. This can be in a number of ways. We buy many items for the Unit, not just expensive medical equipment but also smaller items which can make just as much a difference. Currently we are planning to change the majority of chairs on the unit.
We have bought some very specialised chairs in the last 2 years which mean babies in ICU can have skin to skin and cuddles much easier with places to put the associated tubing. We now want to be able to provide much comfier chairs for the rest of the ward.
In this photo of ICU the Support Group has purchased the ventilator, Giraffe Omnibed, the ECG Monitor and the blue chair.
The Support Group also pays for specialised training for the staff so they can keep as up to date as possible.
The Support Group currently hires a beach hut on North Bay at Scarborough where families can go free of charge for the day.
The Support Group pays for all the Donor Breastmilk that is used of the ward.
The Support Group supports families who have had their baby transferred to another hospital with a small donation to help with their travel.
The Support Group pays for all babies to have 2 muslins so they can continue to have the smell of their parents near them and vice versa.
The Support Group paid for the full refurbishment of our Milk Kitchen.
How can you help?
We have meetings every couple of months so it isn’t a huge commitment for anyone wishing to join us.
One of the most important aspects is for us to support everyone who raises money for us, we are so very grateful and we all love to say thank you because we know what it means to the families to have the support of the Support Group.
Our AGM is on Monday 2nd October and we would welcome anyone who wants to come and see what we do. Message the Facebook page to find more details.
