Tonight we visited the first night of Illuminating Rievaulx. To see such an impressive structure lit up in the dark was a magical experience, it was truly magnificent. The colours were amazing with the back drop of a virtually clear sky. The weather was perfect, a clear night with an autumnal feel. The pinks, reds, blues and yellows shone brightly. Henry was particularly taken with the welcoming monk. Eliza loved the colours. There was a Halo, an interactive musical and light installation, which you touched to light it and make a sound. Both kids loved the toasting of marshmallows round the fire pit. They were giant marshmallows which tasted delicious. They were a £1 – lasted ages and you could do multiple toastings!
The architectural elegance of the building, accentuated by the lighting, was breathtaking, especially when considering the size and expanse of Rievaulx. The space was great fun for the kids and they enjoyed doing something different. Explaining to Henry that it was built by hand with only horse power was difficult. He also was slightly taken aback by the size of the refectory and the fact that the monks would have eaten their meals in silence was definitely a step too far! This Cistercian Abbey is very impressive and it was a great experience to see it lit on such a pleasant evening.
For your convenience, a shuttle bus will run to the Abbey from near Helmsley Castle, which will take you to and from the event. Car Parking on site is only available for blue badge holders. The café will be open and a full range of hot and cold food and drinks will be available.
