This year’s theme is the MOON, which coincides beautifully with 50 years since the moon landing. The colours were amazing with the back drop of a virtually clear sky. The weather was perfect, a clear night with an autumnal feel. This Cistercian Abbey is very impressive and it was a great experience to see it lit on such a pleasant evening.
The architectural elegance of the building, accentuated by the lighting, was breathtaking, especially when considering the size and expanse of Rievaulx. The space was great fun for the kids and it is nice to enjoy something different, with the lovely musical backdrop. It was also amazing that a glitter ball could be used in such a “classy” way!
As you wander through the historic ruins, the moon theme runs through with moon related music playing in the Infirmary and in Cloisters. Ampleforth College are performing musical recitals on Thursday evening, whilst another trio are playing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
There will also be moon stories told by an Astronaut in full NASA space suit just off the Nave in 2 sets at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
Fire pits will warm the autumn air and give you the opportunity to roast a marshmallow (or two) in the fire pit as you listen to the sounds and explore the abbey after dark. The café will be open and a full range of hot and cold food and drinks will be available.
