Days Out Ryedale

Parks & Playgrounds

In line with Government guidance on COVID-19 and the recommendation to avoid gatherings and crowded places, many of our local family days out are looking at closing to the public. For any of the listings on here please check with the venue if it is open or closed before attending.

I am endeavouring to keep the listings as up to date as possible but please check with venues first, thanks for your understanding at this crazy time, Team Mumbler.

A day out with the kids at Castle Howard just became even more adventurous and intriguing. Now they can join into the treetops of Yorkshire’s newest adventure playground, Skelf Island.

For centuries the Skelves have inhabited a secret world, over the water from Castle Howard, causing mischief and mayhem high up in the trees, interacting with birds and protecting wildlife. Now they have become curious about the humans that visit and want to explore and play with them.

Ingenious treetop nest structures connected by rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment will allow the Skelves to take young visitors on an adventure like no other.

Skelf Island is included in a gardens ticket.

A Lovely walk suggested by Hawkes Health, Fitness & Coaching.

4 miles (1.5-2 hours)
Easy family walk
Me and my son did this in the pouring rain, I loved it but I’m sure it will be great in the sun 🌞
A. From the car park, walk down to the Ryedale folk museum and the go past the chapel. Turn left at a footpath sign and keep to the left of the bowling green. Cross a series of fields and fairy call beck.
B. Turn right on the road and walk along its wide grassy verge.
C. Where the road bends sharply right, turn left away from it on a rough track for about 120 yards at the side of a swampy field to a path junction.
D. Fork right following a well-defined path out on to the open moor. Keep the field boundary wall in sight and walk as far as the group of buildings of camomile farm. Turn left away from the farm, still following the boundary, to cross a small but steep-sides valley.
E. Turn right at a footpath junction to join the lane into Lastingham village.
F. Pass a row of riverside cottages, fork right beyond the last one and walk up the steep grassy track. The track can be muddy after rain, but with a little care the worst parts can be avoided
G. Climb through a belt of mature beech trees as far as the road. Bear right and walk through Spaunton.
H. Turn right at the T-junction and then left to grange farm.
I. Follow directions signs through the farmyard.
J. Follow a waymarked path around the edge of a series of fields.
K. Go downhill through sparse woodland to the roadside. Hutton village is on the right

Sutton Bank Adventure Play Area

There’s a brand new fabulous play area outside, using natural landscape features to provide a place for adventure and fun for younger children.
Come and enjoy two quirky treehouses, a stone castle, three magical stone roundhouses, the large sandpit with a ‘play tree’ in the centre, a mud kitchen, go log clambering over the ‘swamp’ and enjoy den building.
