This half term, North Yorkshire Moors Railway have a Light Spectacular departing for an hour return journey between Pickering and Levisham. There are two services 6pm and 745pm.
We went last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. We took the 6pm train and had something to eat in Pickering afterwards.
We were greeted in the car park and given our light up NYMR wristbands. This created a buzz of excitement exacerbated further when they saw the station and train all lit up. We bought a drink from the open shop and climbed aboard the Light Spectacular.
The ‘disco’ train left at 6pm prompt and we were accompanied by ‘the voice over man’ Peter Dixon on our journey from Pickering to Levisham.
The train had fairy lights both outside and in, and the clever wristbands changed colour and sequence with the music and voice over man’s instruction which delighted Henry and Eliza.
We had tracks from the 60’s up to modern day which the grown ups loved. Henry certainly got into it with the YMCA – we were away! We sang on with Eliza and Henry dancing in the aisle. It was great fun to do something different as a family, that we all enjoyed.
The outside scenery looked fabulous with the lights. The spooky trees growing different colours were our favourite. People were waving along the way at the train which the children loved. Something they would now like to do!
When we reached Levisham the train stopped for quite a while but the music never stopped. We had a Grease medley and we all joined in with We will Rock You by stamping our feet twice and then adding a clap! All in time with the lights.
We arrived back in Pickering Station at around 7:20pm having had a wonderful evening. It was great to do something different and good fun. Not sure train rides will ever be this much fun again….
Fun for all the family and the atmosphere was lovely from start to finish and got a 10/10 from the kids. There were toilets on the train and there is a trolley service. The kids were thrilled to keep the wristband at the end especially having had a handy tip from the man giving them out – keep the plastic tag and you can put them in to preserve the battery for longer!
When we got back the station looked magical and the kids loved watching the engine, all lit up moving to the other end of the train ready for the next service. It gave some great photo opportunities!
North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a not for profit organisation, reliant on volunteers with all money raised going into preserving these wonderful steam trains for future generations.
There are still some tickets available. They are £30 per person. However we have a 20% discount code of LOCAL20. In our opinion, the earlier slots are perfect for those with little ones and the later one for adults and older children BOOK HERE
