Scarborough Survivors is a mental health charity run by people with lived experience of mental illness. Some of you will perhaps have visited the popular seaside town of Scarborough. It may seem a long way from you, but our simple message is relevant wherever you are in North Yorkshire – we need to talk about mental health. The fact is, whether we live in rural or urban areas, any one of us can be affected by mental illness and in any year one in four people will become mentally unwell.
But due to misconceptions and fear of being misjudged, many people do not feel able to talk openly or get the support they need. Working in partnership with NYCC Pubic Health we would like to break down the stigma associated with mental illness.
We have grants of up to £500 available to enable people across the county to hold events or activities in their community where the main objective is to talk about their experiences of mental illness.
Holding a conversation is something we do every day. National awareness initiative Time to Change is encouraging people to take every opportunity to include mental health in a conversation. For example, inviting people to have coffee and cake in a favourite café, talking as part of a regular social activity, arranging a stroll and a chat in a local park or holding a knit and natter or crafting social. We can help you with ideas if you are not sure how to get started.
There is a simple application form available from Scarborough Survivors. Those applying can enlist others – friends, family, work colleagues – to help with holding a social event or activity. Applications are open to anyone aged 18 or over until the end of October 2018. The money can be used to cover items such as out of pocket or volunteer expenses, publicity, venue hire, refreshments, resources for an activity or ingredients for baking etc.
Those applying will be advised of the outcome within six weeks and the money is awarded before the activity takes place. To find out more or to request an application pack ring 01723 500222 or email survivorstimetochange@gmail.com. We’re on Facebook too.
