With its motto of ‘Great music in beautiful places’ the Ryedale Festival was recently runner-up in the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards for Best UK Festival. Here are ten ways to enjoy the Festival this year.
There’s no better way to enjoy classical music than hearing a top performer in an intimate venue – and some of the biggest names in music are appearing in stunning Ryedale locations this summer. Browse our brochure and take your pick…
The Gesualdo Six bring the past alive as vividly as any Hilary Mantel novel. The pinpoint beauty and purity of their voices will be extra-special in the long-echoing spaces of Ampleforth Abbey as they perform music from the time of Henry VIII to the present day.
Under eights will love our musical version of the children’s book-of-the-moment Izzy Gizmo (17th July) while older children can enjoy the inspirational National Youth Choir in Scarborough (22nd July).
Ronnie Scott’s bandleader Pete Long is in town with some of his most brilliant colleagues to present their hilarious and fascinating show 100 Years of Jazz in 99 minutes in Malton (22nd July). Catch some spellbinding late-night Scottish folk music for harp, Shetland, fiddle, and String Quartet (20th July)
A fabulous group of young singers and musicians bring the magic of Handel’s Acis and Galatea (19th-21st July) to three beautiful and atmospheric Ryedale churches. It’s a story of love, jealousy, anger and sorrow, with some of the most beautiful melodies Handel ever wrote.
At the Ryedale Festival, the locations are as special as the music. Check out Birdsall House – as beautiful and elegant as any Bridgerton set – while enjoying a brilliant piano recital (20th July). Or come to the idyllic village of Hovingham to hear Handel’s choral masterpiece Dixit Dominus or trailblazing artist Rebeca Omordia for some ‘African Pianism’ (25th July) and stay for lunch from one from the one the superb local pubs and bakeries.
All are welcome to join the charismatic choral leader Ben Parry and live band for an afternoon singing their greatest hits of everyone’s favourite Swedish supergroup! Enthusiasm is all you need (flares are optional!) and participants of all ages and abilities are welcome (23rd July).
At the Ryedale Festival, we take pride in spotting them and supporting them. To name just three, check out the spellbinding Scottish accordionist Ryan Corbett on a troubadour trail (21st-23rd July), the sensational trumpeter Lucienne Renaudin Vary (27th July), or the captivating violinist Roberts Balanas who blends classical, pop, rock and funk in a late-night concert (24th July). And remember– you heard them in Ryedale first…
This is one of the country’s friendliest festivals and newcomers are assured of a warm welcome. Volunteering (everything from giving an artist a lift to helping run the bar at concerts) is a great way to meet new people and be a part of something special in your local area.
If you’re attending the Festival for the very first time you can come to selected events for only £10, and under 18s tickets are only £5! Simply call our box office 01751 475 777 when you book your tickets.
We look forward to seeing you this summer!
