Wuthering Heights at Castle Howard is something I have been looking forward to for some time. As I looked out the window last night as the rain poured, I truly hoped the weather forecast was right and it was going to fair up….it did!
The setting was perfect in the walled gardens of Castle Howard. When we found our seats, the set was thought provoking and it filled us with intrigue.
The performance was captivating with fantastic performances by the entire cast. The rye humour of Mr Lockwood kept the audience chuckling despite the darkness of the story. As this fantastic love story became “darker” as did the evening – a sign of things to come.
The sound effects of the other actors made the story come alive, augmented by the Castle Howard peacocks who seemed to time their calls to perfection. Costume changes and set changes were managed perfectly. It truly felt like you were part of the story, there on the Moors at The Heights or The Gables.
The Walled Garden lends itself perfectly as an Open Air Theatre and the weather forecast is perfect for the duration. Wednesday 26th June to Sunday 30th June at 7.30pm with 2.30pm matinee performances on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. I can thoroughly recommend it as an escape from the children. The Fitzroy Restaurant will be open for refreshments. It lasted just over 2 hours with a 15 minute interval. It did get a touch cold so I would take a decent coat and a rug.
