What a fun filled, family entertainment evening we had watching Pickering Musical Society’s panto of Jack and the Beanstalk. A stellar cast were supported by an incredible ensemble of senior and junior dancers and accompanied by a wonderful orchestra.
The show followed a traditional panto style – there were jokes for all ages and some fun local references. Audience participation was highly encouraged (much to my delight!) and there was plenty of opportunity to be involved, rounding off with a lyrically changed version of “She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain” which everyone could get their teeth into. The children were even invited up to get sweets which was the icing on the cake.
The fairytale was set to a variety of beautifully painted backgrounds and Jack was a star throughout. The Ogre sounded very scary but he wasn’t too much for the younger ones. Nellie was a really fun character to watch and the Blue Fairy performed an astounding version of The Impossible Dream – what a voice!
The choreography for the senior and junior dancers was incredible and they were a really wonderful part of the show with plenty of involvement. When you think of how much the actors and the dancers had to remember and that everyone is volunteering to do this around other jobs it really does make you appreciate how much work goes into producing a show like this. All the front of house staff were so welcoming and charming which makes a great start to the evening.
