As the school holidays draw to a close, there are several places offering free admission at points during September. These are listed on the Events Calendar
Wolds Way Lavender – Free admission all September! Great family fun, open 10am – 4pm. CLOSED Fridays and Saturdays.
English Heritage’s Yorkshire Abbey Season returns (23-24 September, 30 September – 1 October) with events at some of our greatest abbeys and priories, including Rievaulx Abbey, Byland Abbey and Mount Grace Priory. Meet the medieval Living History characters as your explore the magnificent ruins at Byland, join monks at Mount Grace and gain an insight into what life was like for those living there. At Rievaulx witness fantastic displays of falconry and discover how hawks generated income for the abbeys. For members of English Heritage the admission is free however, non-members still have to pay standard admission rates which they can find by following this link to our webpage.
National Trust, Nunnington Hall, Nunnington, York, North Yorkshire, YO62 5UY Picturesque Yorkshire manor house with organic garden and exciting exhibitions. Enjoy the atmosphere of this beautiful Yorkshire manor house, nestled on the quiet banks of the River Rye. Explore the period rooms whilst hearing the Hall’s many tales and discover one of the world’s finest collections of miniature rooms in the attic. Opening Times: Friday 8 September: 1030-1700 and Saturday 9 September: 1030-1700
National Trust, Rievaulx Terrace & Temples, Mossy Bank Wood, Rievaulx, York, North Yorkshire, YO62 5LJ One of Yorkshire’s finest 18th-century landscape gardens, containing two temples. Discover one of Ryedale’s true gems – the 18th-century landscape of Rievaulx Terrace. Stroll through woods, then out on to the terrace, with its stunning views down over the Cistercian ruin of Rievaulx Abbey. In spring the bank between the temples is awash with wild flowers, in summer the lawns are the perfect spot for picnics, while in autumn the beech woods are a mass of rich hues. Rievaulx Terrace’s close proximity to Nunnington Hall makes it an ideal double visit in one day. Opening Times: Friday 8 September: 1000-1700 and Saturday 9 September: 1000-1700
Ryedale Folk Museum opens its doors for free on Saturday 9 September 10am – 5pm
Howsham Mill, Howsham Hall Road, Howsham, York, North Yorkshire, YO60 7PA Come and see the recently restored Georgian watermill and swing bridge that gives access to the island on which the mill stands for free. Guides will be on hand to tell you the history of the mill and its more recent past and restoration. You will also be able to see the Archimedes Screw turbines and restored waterwheel that give the mill a 21st century use – generating hydro-electricity. If you wish, bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings next to the River Derwent. Opening Times: Sunday 10 September: 1000-1700
Head to the Rotunda Museum for Scarborough’s fourth Yorkshire Fossil Festival (22–24 September). Scarborough Museums Trust is behind the three day event, with fossil foragers, fossil experts, guided dinosaur footprint walks and lots of fun for the kids. The main festival is free too!
