Grants available to help keep your family warm

 

Keep your family warm and reduce the financial strain of your energy bills with the government-backed North Yorkshire Home Efficiency Fund.

Households in Ryedale and Scarborough can benefit from fully-funded energy efficiency upgrades.

The average grant is £10,000, with some householders receiving up to £25,000 towards measures to create a warm and cosy home.

Homeowners or private renters qualify by meeting one of the following eligibility criteria:

• household income of £30,000 or less
• receive income related benefits

Homes must also be classed as inefficient to heat, with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of D, E, F or G – a new EPC is covered by the grant if required.

Householders don’t have to pay a penny, however landlords would be required to contribute at least one third towards the costs.

The scheme closes in March next year, with funding allocated on a first come first served basis.

As well as applying for the scheme, you can follow the below guidelines and see if you can pick up any energy and money saving habits:

• Checking your thermostat
  Dropping the temperature by just one degree probably won’t feel colder, but could reduce your usage and save you money
• Washing your clothes
  While it can be tempting to wash at a high temperature, a 30 or 40 degree wash will still keep your clothes clean
• Using your tumble dryer
  If you can, air dry your laundry to save over 50p per dry
• Updating your supplier
  Shopping around on sites like USwitch and Compare the Market may offer you a better deal
• Choosing your payment method
  Most energy providers offer a discount up to 10% if you opt to pay by direct debit
