Sledmere Masterman, aka Walter was born on the 5th May 2019 at 4.42am.
We popped along to meet him and he is a cracker! He is massively friendly and keen for a stroke. It is amazing for children to be able to get so close to a young foal. Cottage Farm Julie, Julie to her friends is keen to show him off and is proving to be a great Mum. Shires are “big friendly giants” and it is very special to be able to get so close them.
Walter has 4 white socks and is likely to be black in time. Shires are magnificent animals and are tall, gentle, noble and immensely strong. They played an important role in the First World War particularly as part of the Sledmere Wagoners. The men of the Wagoners Reserve undertook, the essential but un-glamorous and hazardous work of hauling a range of supplies, food, ammunition, and equipment to the trench systems and forward supply depots every day of the war. Had Walter been born in the early 1900’s, he too would have been drafted into the Wagoners for his strength. As it is, he may be seen pulling the Wolds Cart out and about around Sledmere or at the local shows.
Julie and Walter are not the only shires at Sledmere. Camalter Poppy and Camalter Amy Louise (Amy is Poppy’s mum) also live here. They are a driven pair, driving the Wolds wagon, dray and exercise cart.
Shires are a rare breed and have been classed “at risk” of facing extinction as numbers have dramatically decreased in the last century. Therefore, Sledmere are playing their part in preserving the breed.
Sledmere House is a great place to visit with children. The Grounds, Gardens, Stables, Café, Shops and Play Park open all year round 10am – 5pm Tuesdays to Sundays. CLOSED MONDAYS (except bank holiday Mondays).
Visit The Spotty Pig Play Farm, home to some of the rare breeds kept on the estate including the Leicester Longwool sheep and Oxford Sandy and Black pigs. There are currenly some adorable piglets. Staff are on hand to introduce you to all the animals. It is really intimate and a great place for children to get “up close and personal” with some lovely animals. Lovely adventure play ground where the kids can let off steam.
What is more, they hold some lovely family friendly events including the Deer Safari which continues this Sunday. Later in the month, Vintage Sunday, Annual ‘posh’ charity car boot sale in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Sledmere charities plus Tribfest and a fantastic Firework Display later in the year. Do keep an eye out for these events.
