Centre Parcs Sherwood Forest

“The original centre parcs and in a lot of ways starting to show its age with facilities starting to look a little dated and in need of a revamp and other onsite developments ongoing. Lacks the ability to pay by wristband like Woburn. But still a very good family holiday with lots to do and if you hadn’t been to the others you wouldn’t notice the shortcomings. Only thing to avoid is the swimming pool changing rooms between 2.30 and 3.30 – absolutely manic, although the pool was relatively quiet and this was even in the week in term time.

Overall a lovely family holiday unaffected by the weather but starting to showing its age and better more modern alternatives are available. Can get pricey if you do a lot of activities and eat out a lot.”

Centre Parcs Woburn

“The newest of the parcs and everything very fresh and new with lots of improvements learnt from the other parcs. Wrist bands that you can pay for things with, which is brilliant in the pool. Cabins laid out a bit like Ramsay Street but clean and tidy and have everything you need for the week. Activities really good but don’t get carried away; 1 activity a day plus swimming which is free, is more than enough otherwise you can run up a large bill. Plenty of choice of food on site from a variety of outlets but predominantly on the fast food side and always good with quick service, but expensive enough. If you are so minded the cabin kitchen is perfectly good for preparing your own food and there is an on site supermarket for essentials. We never left the site all week as plenty to do and had friends come and visit. We were there in term time so predominantly families with preschool children like ourselves and a 1,500 person conference which was ideal as the parc was full but the conference weren’t using any facilities and kept themselves to themselves. The ultimate family holiday in the U.K that isn’t effected by the weather but it can get pricey with activities and restaurants etc if you are not careful.”

Crieff Hotel, Crieff, Perth

“A very traditional activity based hotel now with additional log cabins. The fore runner to centre parcs. Far more traditional and laid back than centre parcs with less of the hard sell and set in incredibly beautiful surroundings even in Feb. Lots of local attractions to visit and on the edge of Crieff which is a short downhill walk away (uphill on way back). Lots of activities predominantly outdoors for children none of which were particularly expensive and some free. Conventional indoor pool with a slide which was ideal for getting little ones going as never busy. Good crèche and babysitting service. Rooms traditional, functional and clean, staff extremely helpful. A variety of foods are available from a number of different restaurants etc to suit all tastes from French cuisine, traditional afternoon tea to spaghetti hoops. We were there in term time so there were plenty of families with small children like us, then business conferences and pensioners coach trips so very quiet and laid back no noisey bars or discos.”

The Swan at Newby Bridge

“We have stayed twice at the Swan at Newby Bridge. This is definitely the best family hotel I have stayed in. It is located in a small village at the very bottom of Lake Windermere. It is a large, old building positioned right next to the beautiful river Leven.

Whilst it is reasonably expensive to stay there, it is good value for money and the service is excellent. The rooms are decorated to a very high standard, with plenty of character; we stayed in a suite the second time which gave us ample room for a family of 4.

The hotel has a good sized pool, along with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi and spa treatments. It also has an ice cream parlour, a lovely bar which has real ales on tap and great pub food. The separate restaurant is also excellent and very child friendly whilst still allowing the adults to have a great meal (if the kids behave!)

There are a number of snugs and seating areas as well as a big playroom for the kids. The hotel also offers a listening service and offers free warm milk and cookies at bedtime. There is a woodland walk in the grounds of the hotel which is quite nice to let off some steam, they also have a good playground.

The hotel is ideal for a 2 or 3 nights stay to explore Windermere. There are plenty of attractions around Windermere for toddlers and younger children. In our two trips, we have visited the World of Beatrix Potter, the aquarium, the steam railway, Treetop Nets at Brockhole, took a ferry along the lake and went for some short walks.

Highly recommended for a short break anytime of the year. We visited in February and September. Pack your waterproofs, it’s the Lakes! There is plenty to occupy you in the hotel if the weather is so bad that you can’t face outside activities!”
