The Pick Your Own Trail is now open with lots of juicy fruit and vegetables to pick. The multi-award winning Balloon Tree Farmshop and Cafe have been growing soft fruit and vegetables for over 20 years so they know how to get the best fruit possible! Come and PYO or buy ready picked strawberries fresh that morning from the farm.
All the varieties we grow have been chosen for their taste – we can do this because everything is picked and sold within minutes or hours, not days.

We have introduced the new Summer menu which has a host of tasty home cooked meals, including paninis, summer time salads, daily specials with seasonal variations.
The farmshop and newly extended cafe are open 7 days a week. A great day out for all the family – entertain the children in the play area while you relax in the cafe garden but still able to keep an eye on them. Sample the other superfresh homegrown produce, local meats, homemade award winning cakes and chutneys, and lots more.

Come and join us for a trip back into days gone by when you visit our village shop, blacksmith’s forge, pub, stable and costume gallery. Afterwards, why not relax with a picnic in the grounds of the museum, beside the tranquil Pickering Beck?

Join Billy Shakes and his two mates as he discovers his voice and the tales that have captivated the world for centuries since.
Bursting with live music, puppetry and a wealth of brilliantly barmy historical inaccuracies, this 50-minute fun-filled show is performed in the ‘groundlings’ courtyard of the theatre delivering an interactive and engaging experience in a stunning historical setting.
Billy Shakes: Wonderboy! embraces the joy of story-telling and is the perfect introduction to the delights of Shakespeare for children and adults alike!

New Adventure Playground at Castle Howard
A day out with the kids at Castle Howard just became even more adventurous and intriguing. Now they can join into the treetops of Yorkshire’s newest adventure playground, Skelf Island.
For centuries the Skelves have inhabited a secret world, over the water from Castle Howard, causing mischief and mayhem high up in the trees, interacting with birds and protecting wildlife. Now they have become curious about the humans that visit and want to explore and play with them.
Ingenious treetop nest structures connected by rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment will allow the Skelves to take young visitors on an adventure like no other.
Skelf Island is included in a gardens ticket.

Northwood Trail is nestled in a 100 acre wood at Buttercrambe close to York and this delightful woodland fairy sanctuary is the first of its kind in the world. The eco-aware sanctuary is off grid and, quite uniquely, designed to appeal to adults as much as children. As well as a beautiful woodland trail, it also includes an intriguing Fairy Museum, to display what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of fairy artefacts, collected over many years by owners Carolyn and Christian.
Northwood is about fostering a connection to nature, at its most beautiful and magical. The woodland trail winds through 1.5km of old fairy paths, peppered with fairy tree houses, stump houses, a willow walled maze and Elven thrones. Jousting goes back to its roots in this no-holds-barred tournament of strength, skill and horsemanship. Charging at each other at full speed with only chain mail for protection, each knight will attempt to knock their opponent from their horse. It’s every man for himself in this thrillingly authentic 13th century tournament, inspired by the brutal early days of jousting.
The encampment will be alive with the sights, sounds and smells of medieval life. Listen to merry music, join in with the jester’s jokes and learn about cookery and crafts from centuries ago. You can even meet the knights as they prepare for battle.

Following its highly acclaimed inaugural season in 2018, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre will pop up again at the foot of Clifford’s Tower in the historic heart of York from 25 June to 1 September 2019.
Four new productions of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays – Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night – will once again transport audiences to the thrilling, intimate atmosphere of an Elizabethan playhouse, with plenty of breath-taking, spine-tingling, heart-stopping moments..
Outside the theatre, visitors can experience a vibrant, free-to-enter Shakespearean village, offering the finest Yorkshire food and drinks from oak-framed, reed-thatched buildings, an array of ‘wagon’ entertainment, minstrels and a stunning Elizabethan garden with ornate box-edged beds of cottage flowers, roses and herbs.
The 13-sided scaffolding theatre offers three tiers of covered seating and an open courtyard for standing ‘groundlings’.

The Mile is a farmshop, gift shop and campsite in Pocklington with a great cafe, Smile Cafe. For younger children under five, there’s a lovely indoor soft play area within the cafe plus an outdoor play area. There is also a quieter seating area in the farm shop for older children and families. They also now have a drinks license and there is a picnic & prosecco option to have outside.
The Mile have lots of extra activities over the summer holidays: Outside they have new ride-on toys to use and some exciting new outdoor games to play. Inside the have a Summer Quiz and Colouring sheets for your little ones to do in the cafe. All of these are free of charge.

The Deep – Turtle-y Awesome Summer
Runs 20th July – 1st September 2019. It’s going to be a turtle-y awesome summer here at The Deep, so make sure you don’t miss out!
Get hands on in our very own ‘turtle hospital’ where youngsters can get up close with a giant turtle (a cuddly one, of course) and find out what it takes to look after our flipper-ed friends. Learn all about turtle anatomy and even help the team carry out a turtle health check. Inspect their eyes, nose and mouth, as well as checking their flippers and shell then report back to us on your vet examination form.
Take part in the turtle trail and find out about more about the species that live all around the world and the challenges they face. Enjoy interactive presentations from our guiding team at 11am, 1pm and 3pm and get your face painted in Craft Corner from 11am to 4pm. Plus we will be giving you the chance the put your questions to our Turtle Keepers via our Facebook page each week. So get your thinking caps on!
