Visit Castle Howard and make special summer memories with our beautiful architecture, rich history, and stunning landscapes as your backdrop. This summer is the perfect time to visit the House, Gardens, and award-winning Skelf Island Adventure Playground.

History and art
Step into the 300-year-old Howard family home and be immersed in history and beauty. Take in the showstopping Great Hall, sweeping Long Gallery, and sublime arts and crafts Chapel. Visitors can book a guided tour, or use the digital guide, narrated by Nick Howard, to discover Castle Howard’s stories. See the moving People We Love contemporary art installation in our Chapel.

Family adventures
Skelf Island, Castle Howard’s legendary Adventure Playground, is named after the historic site Castle Howard sits on, Henderskelfe. Set on an island and reachable by a rope bridge, the Playground is a web of ingenious treetop nests in the woodland canopy connected by slides, nets, and climbing equipment.

Glorious green space
The Gardens are a spectacle in the summer, from the lakes home to Yorkshire wildlife, to the Walled Garden and Ray Wood. The Walled Garden is a beautiful place to stroll; laid out in the early 18th century as kitchen garden, today part of the garden is still given over to vegetables, but the remainder of the area has been transformed into a garden of roses. An enchanting woodland garden, Ray Wood holds an impressive collection of plants from around the globe, including nearly 800 species of Rhododendron.

July 29 – August 6

East Riding Libraries are delighted to announce a varied and exciting programme for the Children’s Festival of Words, which will be back with live events this Summer 2023.

The main festival will run from Saturday, 29 July to Sunday, 6 August, and there will also be activities and events throughout July, August and September. Tickets are available here now.

New for this year will be events in support of Beverley Pride, taking place on Saturday, 5 August at Beverley Library. Families can join drag queen Regina Sparkles for Drag Queen Storytime, listen to author LD Lapinski as they speak about their book, ‘Jamie’, and even hear from East Riding Libraries staff in their storytimes that celebrate everything unique about you!

Puppets, Plays and Storydays are back again with an interactive and energetic retelling of Michael Rosen’s fantastic story, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ A classic children’s story, this event will be touring around libraries in the East Riding, starting at North Bridlington Library on 29 July and finishing at Beverley Library on 6 August. During that time, it will also be stopping at Hessle, Haltemprice, Pocklington, South Cave, Willerby, Goole, and Market Weighton.

As well as this, Star Wars artist, JAKe, will be joining East Riding Libraries for a series of ‘How to Draw Star Wars’ workshops, where young padwans can become drawing jedis. With sessions taking place across the East Riding, JAKe will show you how to draw your favourite characters from the Star Wars universe, including Droids, Wookies, Bounty Hunters and more.

To find out what other exciting events are happening at your local East Riding Library, please visit the website here.

This year Forestry England are taking some time to celebrate their fantastic cycling offer at Dalby Forest. Cycling is one of the key activities at Dalby and they already have really brilliant, well established cycling trails and facilities, and something for everyone when it comes to navigating the forest on two wheels.

As well as keeping children physically fit, research has shown that cycling can bring about a feeling of greater self-esteem, self-control and the ability to rise to a challenge.

The NEW Forest Rider pack has been designed to challenge children to complete a series of off-road rides, to help build their confidence and to enjoy the fantastic network of trails the nation’s forest have to offer. Aimed at children aged 7-11, the Forest Rider pack will encourage children to get out and about on their bikes in the forest and be safe and responsible forest riders!

In your pack, you will find:

o A logbook to record your rides

o A cool Forest Rider neck buff

o Pro cycle skill cards to help you be the best forest rider you can be. These include QR codes which, when scanned, will take you to videos teaching you how to do the tricks

o Stickers and activities

o The chance to solve a puzzle to enter a prize drawer to win £350 Halfords voucher, a family experience with Go Ape, a Forestry England Membership and more!

Packs are £5 from the Dalby Forest Visitor Centre, or £6.50 if bought online. You can find more information here:

Calf to Cow present – The Jabberwocky & Other Nonsense

Wednesday 30 August 2023, 6.30pm (garden opens at 5.30pm)

LEWIS CARROLS The Jabberwocky & Other Nonsense at Helmsley Walled Garden

Beware the Jabberwock! The jaws that bite, The claws that catch! Run for your life! Save yourself! AHHH!

The village of Pokeytin is under threat. Their crops and cows disappear in the night. Mrs Dodos’ washing has been pinched from the line and Mr Walrus can’t find a single oyster! Who is to blame? Why the Jabberwocky of course!

Calf 2 Cow present this hilarious new adaption of Lewis Carrol’s (Alice in Wonderland) famous poem The Jabberwocky. Join them as they tell the tale of our young hero from Pokeytin, armed with their vorpal sword, brave the journey to take on the fierce Jabberwock, knock his head off and save the land! Huzzah!

But is this monster really as bad as those old locals make out?

Expect the Calf 2 Cow treatment of silly multi-rolling, kicks and trips, live floor-stamping rock n roll, water buckets, sweaty actors and a giant dragon puppet, breathing actual fire! We hope.

Grab your Jubjub bird, and your best mad hat, and prepare yourself for the belly-laughing quest of a life time. This is the Jabberwocky as NEVER seen before.

One for all ages.

Running time: 1 hour 15mins plus interval

Bring your own picnics, blankets, cushions, and camping-chairs and join us on our outdoor adventure at Helmsley Walled Garden. Come prepared for the weather – the performance will continue come rain come shine!

or…

And new to Events at the Garden, the Vine House Café will stay open and run it’s café menu until 30 minutes before the start of the show. Bar will be open for alcoholic & soft drinks as well as teas & coffee, which can also be ordered for any intervals. Vine House Café picnics are also available to pre-book and take into the garden. Choose from a buddha bowl, a picnic pack-up, a kids lunch box or a scone with jam and cream. You’ll get a basket and rug to enjoy your picnic and to be returned when you’re ready to go. The national Summer Reading Challenge, coordinated by The Reading Agency, is run in 95% of UK public libraries. With around 800,000 children aged 4-11 taking part, the Summer Reading Challenge is the biggest national reading initiative. It runs in libraries throughout the summer holidays, with incentives, activities and events designed to create a real buzz around children’s reading. The challenge is simple – to read six or more library books over the summer.

How do children sign up?
Children or their parents/carers can enrol at the Library by filling in a registration card.

What books can the children read?
The Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children of all reading abilities aged 4 to 11. They can read any books they like – fact books, stories, joke books, picture books – it’s up to them. Audio books count too. As long as they are borrowed from the library, they all count.

Ready, Set, Read!

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is all about games and sports. Children will join our fictional team (and their animal mascots!) as they use their skills to weave their way through a summer obstacle course.

Developed in collaboration with the Youth Sport Trust, the 2023 Summer Reading Challenge will celebrate play and participation, encouraging children to engage in games and sports in any way that best suits them.

Ready, Set, Read! will showcase how reading can be active and engaged, and can itself involve teamwork and community.

The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest free reading for pleasure programme for children. Taking place annually, the Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to keep reading during the summer holidays.

There are loads of lovely events going on in the local libraries so do get involved.

York Pass

Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced rider, our cycle trails give you access to miles of bridleways, roads and tracks across the North York Moors.

Our cycle trails use a mixture of natural and man made trails similar to those found in a purpose built trail centre. Using the same style of trail marking, the mountain biking trails available are:

  • Cliff – family friendly 3 mile ‘green’ circular off-road cycle trail, mostly level, part of which follows the famous cliff edge.
  • Fort – 7.5 mile ‘blue’ trail with 361m ascent/descent (70% stone, 30% natural surface) runs out past the site of the Iron Age fort at Boltby Scar. A shorter loop of 5.5 miles avoids the ascent/descent and is suitable for families. The Fort route also includes part of the Cliff Trail along the cliff edge.
  • Drovers – add a little more distance and variety without increasing the difficulty on the ‘blue’ 10 mile figure of eight trail which passes High Paradise Farm for refreshments.
  • Paradise – a 17-mile ‘red’ trail for experienced mountain bikers, through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the National Park. Expect a few technical features and a steep climb or two.

We also have two purpose-built all-weather cycling tracks: a pump track offering the thrills of riding a loop of banked turns and rollers; and a family-friendly cycle trail that doubles as a cyclocross track for some competitive events during autumn and winter. The family cycle trail, a 2.5km figure-of-eight, provides a longer and wider start to the existing Cliff Trail enabling families to ride side-by-side through woodland, as well as providing better access for those using adapted cycles such as handcycles.
