The multi-award winning Balloon Tree Farmshop and Cafe have been growing soft fruit and vegetables for over 20 years so they know how to get the best fruit possible! All the varieties we grow have been chosen for their taste – we can do this because everything is picked and sold within minutes or hours, not days. (All subject to availability – you can always phone to check if you are coming from a distance.)

We have introduced the new Summer menu which has a host of tasty home cooked meals, including paninis, summer time salads, daily specials with seasonal variations.

The farmshop and newly extended cafe are open 7 days a week. A great day out for all the family – entertain the children in the play area while you relax in the cafe garden but still able to keep an eye on them. 10am – 12pm Wednesday & Friday at Malton Castle Garden
Forest School sessions for parents and carers with young children

Join us at Little Woodland Explorers throughout the seasons at Malton Castle Garden.  This is a relaxed free flow community space in the centre of town. The weekly sessions exist to heighten seasonal awareness amongst parents and carers with young children, develop outdoor confidence and forge friendships.

Our forest school activities include nature walks where we observe wildlife in their natural habitats and hunt for seasonal treasures.  Our activities include, painting using our traditional or mud based paints with a variety of natural handmade brushes.  We make our own natural dyes to print using the leaves, fruits and flowers, we find in the garden. Other activities include journey sticks, den building, making rivers and lakes in the muddy area.  We cook over open fires and our wild garlic pesto pasta is a sensation. We spend time in the listening wigwam for traditional nature stories or we read in the reading den.  Whittling provides a fun pastime for both adults and children and encourages good concentration skills.  For the more active there are always our handcrafted hobby horses that will take any willing rider over the finish line.

We wind up each session with a hot drink, the Kelly Kettle is boiled and hot chocolate is served with marshmallows often thrown in for good measure.

North York Moors Railway – Harry Potter Family Fun

25th to 27th August

The summer holidays are almost over but you can still enjoy a day out filled with thrills and family fun on the railway!

Travel along our 24 mile scenic journey and encounter walks, wildlife, beaches and more! PLUS, there’ll be something a little bit magical going on in Goathland…

Be sure to stop at Goathland Station where we will be joined by the North Yorkshire Moors Birds of Prey team and their live display of owl species, which are the same as those that appear in the first Harry Potter film. Learn more about your favourite character’s feathered friends from the team, before turning yourself into your favourite Witch or Wizard! You will have the opportunity to dress up in a themed wig and cloak and your photograph taken with the owl of your choice against a themed backdrop (a small donation will be taken to go towards the NYMR’s Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey appeal.)

Your day out doesn’t have to be in just one place – all of our day return tickets are ‘hop on, hope off’ so make the most of it and explore all of the station stops along the line:
Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station that will transport you back in time to the steam era.
Let off Steam at Levisham and explore the heart of the North York Moors National Park!
A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film.
Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines!
Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey.
