A day out with the kids at Castle Howard just became even more adventurous and intriguing. Now they can join into the treetops of Yorkshire’s newest adventure playground, Skelf Island.

For centuries the Skelves have inhabited a secret world, over the water from Castle Howard, causing mischief and mayhem high up in the trees, interacting with birds and protecting wildlife. Now they have become curious about the humans that visit and want to explore and play with them.

Ingenious treetop nest structures connected by rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment will allow the Skelves to take young visitors on an adventure like no other.

Skelf Island is included in a gardens ticket.

OPEN WITH RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE, lovely open air destination.

Join us at Northwood and enjoy the beautiful fairy trail in spring sunshine, the perfect combination of imagination and fresh air. Our fairy museum  will also be showing an exhibition of spring fairies and have an additional scavenger trail of spring hares.

Northwood Trail is nestled in a 100 acre wood at Buttercrambe close to York and this delightful woodland fairy sanctuary is the first of its kind in the world. The eco-aware sanctuary is off grid and, quite uniquely, designed to appeal to adults as much as children. As well as a beautiful woodland trail, it also includes an intriguing Fairy Museum, to display what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of fairy artefacts, collected over many years by owners Carolyn and Christian.

Northwood is about fostering a connection to nature, at its most beautiful and magical. The woodland trail winds through 1.5km of old fairy paths, peppered with fairy tree houses, stump houses, a willow walled maze and Elven thrones. There is also a natural play area for smaller children and den building for older kids.

In keeping with the sustainable ethos, a stylish woodland kitchen will be serving organic teas and coffees as well as healthy and delicious local food.

Please note, as car parking is limited tickets are only available online, with pre allocated slots making for a calmer experience.

Scarborough Museums Trust is presenting a packed programme of exciting seaside and animal-themed stories, crafts and activities this summer – with the help of Lari the Seagull.

Between 22 July and 20 August, the Trust’s Learning Team will be taking over its social media and adding family information and activities based around objects in the Scarborough Borough Collection.

On Wednesdays from 22 July to 19 August, families can enjoy Seaside Adventures, from meeting rockpool creatures to magical selkies – mythical seal folk – all inspired by paintings at Scarborough Art Gallery, and designed by storyteller and artist, Jan Bee Brown.

On Thursdays from 23 July to 20 August, Animal Antics will take participants on a journey across the world inspired by animals in the natural history collections.

The highlight each week will be a new audio story written especially for Scarborough Museums Trust by Jan Bee Brown, released each Wednesday. The stories will bring paintings from the collections to life, weaving together folk tales and local characters and landmarks, from Dottie the Donkey to the Hispaniola.

A short video will also be released each Thursday showing children how to make one of the art activities. It will include voiceovers by children from the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s Youth Theatre group.

Families are invited to share pictures of their artworks with Scarborough Museums Trust, using the hashtag #SummerAdventures

For families that don’t have printers the Trust will be providing free activity templates each week which can be collected from Scarborough Art Gallery. Visiting the gallery will be a little bit different for a while. Due to social distancing only a limited number of families are allowed to visit at any one time and you may need to wait if the gallery is very busy.

The activities and videos will be available on the family learning page:

Sutton Bank National Park Centre

Bike, run, walk, climb, glide – find out about the amazing world of adventure awaiting for you at Sutton Bank.

Bring your own bike or hire one on site and enjoy the fantastic cycling facilities at Sutton Bank. It’s a great place to get your family cycling, providing access to many miles of bridleways, roads and tracks across the North York Moors.
Our cycle trails use a mixture of natural and man made trails similar to those found in a purpose built trail centre. Using the same style of trail marking, the mountain biking trails available are:
Cliff – family friendly 3 mile ‘green’ circular off-road cycle trail, mostly level, part of which follows the famous cliff edge.
Fort – 7.5 mile ‘blue’ trail with 361m ascent/descent (70% stone, 30% natural surface) runs out past the site of the Iron Age fort at Boltby Scar. A shorter loop of 5.5 miles avoids the ascent/descent and is suitable for families. The Fort route also includes part of the Cliff Trail along the cliff edge.
Drovers – add a little more distance and variety without increasing the difficulty on the new ‘blue’ 10 mile figure of eight trail which passes High Paradise Farm for refreshments.
Paradise – a 17-mile ‘red’ trail for experienced mountain bikers, through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the National Park. Expect a few technical features and a steep climb or two.
