New Adventure Playground at Castle Howard

A day out with the kids at Castle Howard just became even more adventurous and intriguing. Now they can join into the treetops of Yorkshire’s newest adventure playground, Skelf Island.

For centuries the Skelves have inhabited a secret world, over the water from Castle Howard, causing mischief and mayhem high up in the trees, interacting with birds and protecting wildlife. Now they have become curious about the humans that visit and want to explore and play with them.

Ingenious treetop nest structures connected by rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment will allow the Skelves to take young visitors on an adventure like no other.

Skelf Island is included in a gardens ticket.

Northwood Trail is nestled in a 100 acre wood at Buttercrambe close to York and this delightful woodland fairy sanctuary is the first of its kind in the world. The eco-aware sanctuary is off grid and, quite uniquely, designed to appeal to adults as much as children. As well as a beautiful woodland trail, it also includes an intriguing Fairy Museum, to display what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of fairy artefacts, collected over many years by owners Carolyn and Christian.

Northwood is about fostering a connection to nature, at its most beautiful and magical. The woodland trail winds through 1.5km of old fairy paths, peppered with fairy tree houses, stump houses, a willow walled maze and Elven thrones. There is also a natural play area for smaller children and den building for older kids.

In keeping with the sustainable ethos, a stylish woodland kitchen will be serving organic teas and coffees as well as healthy and delicious local food.

Please note, as car parking is limited tickets are only available online, with pre allocated slots making for a calmer experience.

Discover what it was like to live, work and fight in a real-life castle. Test your jousting and sword skills against your opponents and see if you have what it takes to become legendary.

Victorian Sports Day: Sat 27 – Sun 28 Jul 2019 11am – 5pm

Tournament: Joust and Melee at Scarborough Castle: Sat 10 – Sun 11 Aug 2019 11am – 5pm
Jousting goes back to its roots in this no-holds-barred tournament of strength, skill and horsemanship. Charging at each other at full speed with only chain mail for protection, each knight will attempt to knock their opponent from their horse. It’s every man for himself in this thrillingly authentic 13th century tournament, inspired by the brutal early days of jousting.

The encampment will be alive with the sights, sounds and smells of medieval life. Listen to merry music, join in with the jester’s jokes and learn about cookery and crafts from centuries ago. You can even meet the knights as they prepare for battle. Make sure to book your tickets before 9th August to receive 10% discount.

Medieval Myths & Legends: Sat 24 – Mon 26 Aug 2019 11am – 4pm
England’s past is bursting with tales of brave heroes, formidable foes and weird and wonderful happenings. Join us to uncover these myths and legends for yourself this summer at Scarborough Castle.

Witness the skills of our fighting knights in live action throughout the day, and laugh as our jolly Medieval Jester entertains you with his silliness and foolary.

Following its highly acclaimed inaugural season in 2018, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre will pop up again at the foot of Clifford’s Tower in the historic heart of York from 25 June to 1 September 2019.

Four new productions of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays – Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night – will once again transport audiences to the thrilling, intimate atmosphere of an Elizabethan playhouse, with plenty of breath-taking, spine-tingling, heart-stopping moments..

Outside the theatre, visitors can experience a vibrant, free-to-enter Shakespearean village, offering the finest Yorkshire food and drinks from oak-framed, reed-thatched buildings, an array of ‘wagon’ entertainment, minstrels and a stunning Elizabethan garden with ornate box-edged beds of cottage flowers, roses and herbs.

The 13-sided scaffolding theatre offers three tiers of covered seating and an open courtyard for standing ‘groundlings’.

Step back in time and experience Shakespeare as it was in his day, with bloody battles, comic mayhem, gruesome murders and grand oratory!
